“Democrats Breaking Records: Control Fewest State Legislatures in History
Jason Hopkins | November 10, 2016

The White House and Senate results are not the only great news for conservatives [After the 2008 election, the Democrats controlled both Houses of Congress and the Presidency. Tea Party conservatives gave the House to the Republicans in 2010 and the Senate to the Republicans in 2014 and got very little for it. We have now given the House, Senate, and Presidency to the Republicans. They had better begin to produce positive results!]. In what seemed like an impossibility given their already-dominant control of state governments across the country, the GOP made even more gains in state legislatures on Election Day [The switch at the State level has been even greater than the change at the federal level!].

While lots of state governments in America are divided in partisan control, Republicans and Democrats do hold trifectas in numerous statestrifecta control being when a single party controls the governors mansion and both legislative chambers [Nebraska has a unicameral legislature.]

Democrats went into Election Day only holding trifectas in seven statestheir lowest totals since the Civil War (when the country was 15 states fewer). It seemed plausible the only direction they could go was up.

That didn’t happen.

Democrats only retained five trifectas across the country amid more Republican gains at the local level. Republican Phil Scott was elected governor in the blue bastion of Vermont, putting a check on their Democratic controlled legislature. The GOP also battled to a tie in the Connecticut state Senate [Two years ago, blue State Illinois elected a Republican governor although he is an admittedly RINO Republican. This year the Republicans picked up four more State House seats but lost a federal House and Senate seat. The losing incumbent Republicans were Democrat-lite Republicans. Democrat-lite being worse than a RINO. Illinois has a long way to go.].

Republicans finally gained control of the Kentucky state Housethe remaining legislative chamber in the South to be controlled by Democrats. They also won majority control of the Iowa Senate. Regarding the Kentucky and Iowa wins, Republican candidates unseated Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal and Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbomaking GOP gains there all the more symbolic.

Democrats may have successfully unseated North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory (no official call has been made, however, Attorney General Roy Cooper is leading [Last I heard which was earlier tonight on the Mark Levin show, the Democrat led by about 5,000 votes]), but Republicans maintained their super-majority in the state capitoldenying a future Governor Cooper of veto power.

Local Democrats will only control all the levers of power in five states: California [Electoral College votes 55], Delaware [Electoral College votes 3], Oregon [Electoral College votes 7], Hawaii [Electoral College votes 4], and Rhode Island [Electoral College votes 4]. In comparison, the GOP will enter 2017 holding trifectas in half [25] the country’s state governments [Including Texas with the second largest electoral college vote.].

Who controls State government is important not only because of policy but also because redistricting is approaching. After the 2020 census, some States will lose members of Congress, some will gain members of Congress, and some will remain the same. After the 2010 census, the Democrats in Illinois redrew Congressional Districts and redrew 3 newly elected Republicans (2010 election) out of office. The more control of State governments the Republicans can get, the better for the House elections in the 2020s. Both Parties try to redistrict to their advantage!
